DSC students tackle sitcom market

Utah is now the home to the first sitcom entirely written, produced and filmed within state lines.
The aptly titled sitcom "Roomies" will feature four students as starring cast members led by Director Bobby Bowden, a junior communication major from Layton.
The local sitcom follows four college students through the ups and downs of college life and campus living. However, the way the story is told makes this sitcom one that will intrigue audience members.
"The sitcom is first shot from a guy's point of view, and the second half is shot from a female's point of view," Bowden said.
The different points of view will allow people to experience how the opposite sex views the same situation.
"I originally pitched the idea to Stan Everett, chairman of D-TV, and he liked the idea and gave us a 12-episode first season on D-TV," Bowden said. "If it's a good enough product he said he will submit it to the Emmy's."
Bowden has directed and produced several films prior to "Roomies." He has been to the Cannes Film Festival in France for an original short film. Bowden became the first filmmaker in the state of Utah to have a film accepted into this world-renowned festival. Bowden's film was presented on the same day Director Steven Spielberg presented the recent "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."
Danielle Wolverton, a sophomore art major from St. George, plays Becky, a snobby teen who makes a living as a model.
"The part was written for me based on a similar character I previously played in an earlier film project," Wolverton said. "The production has been really fun. We have a good group of people."
Producer Sheldon Demke also plays Mick in the sitcom. Demke describes his character as an average, straight-laced normal guy.
"My character gets put into situations where he has to act irrationally or not myself," Demke said. "Im also co-writing the third and fourth episode right now."
He said they want to incorporate shots of notable St. George areas.
"That way when people watch the show they feel connected and recognize the area," Demke said.
The pilot episode of "Roomies" is tentatively scheduled to hit the air on CEC in the beginning of February.

Rooomies
The first episode has been shot! It took two long all nighters of shooting. I got to come and watch the second day of shooting and even be an extra! It was shot at the Red Cliffs Cinema we got to throw popcorn, and soda on the directors, it was a lot of fun! A few days after it was shot we got a phone call that everything that had been shot at the apartment was to brown so we needed a new location and that needed to be re-shot. Long story short that got the director/writer/creator/actor, thinking and he decided that he was rewriting the whole show. He invited Dave, and a few of the other actors to go and pitch ideas. There is now a four episodes written waiting to be filmed. Filming begins Jan 11, and they are still planning on meeting their end of January Premiere.
An extra little fun side note. The director, has a composer that he usually works through for his film projects, but he knows that Dave writes music and he thought he would give him a chance. He ended up picking Dave's the shows theme song! It is inspired by Flight of the Concords (what the director was looking for.) Listen close when you watch the show.

Acting Dave
Some very exciting news has been happening around the Andersen house but Dave has been forbidding me from telling people. I did however, sneak and told his dad, brother, and sisters anyway. Now I just can not keep it a secret any longer and it is going on our blog.
In September Dave saw an open call audition for a indie short film, and thought he would give it a try. He went to the audition, his first ever audition outside of the high school and middle school plays he was in, and landed a part! It is a small supporting role. It is a very important role though, because his character sets the whole tone of the movie. His characters name is Evil. So that was very exciting to land a role on the first try out. It was going to wrap filming the weekend before Thanksgiving. Then be shown on the Festival Circuit (Sundance, Cannes etc.) for about a year. It is also being submitted as a pilot to possibly be made into a full length feature. It will likely get recast if that happens but its still cool!
He has also filmed two commercials for the "Spot On Competition". This is a competition that UT does. The commercials are intended to show UT as a filmable, and desirable location. The winning commercials are shown on the Travel Channel, another channel I dont remember, and are selected to air at different Film Festivals. So keep your fingers crossed.
Two days ago Dave gets a call from the director, the movie is being put on hold it will now wrap filming in either December of January, because they just got green lighted for St. Georges first ever sitcom and it has to be done in December. They have The Echo and other running programs here but not a sitcom. So we are a little bummed except that they want Dave to be in the sitcom!!!! They will be shooting four episodes that will appear on Dtv, if the show does well it will get picked up for a whole season. If it has high ratings it might be shown an KSL, airing on all of Utah
